This tiny introductory treatise is written as an apology. Belatedly, I was informed that, unintentionally, and might I add unknowingly, I penned a persuasive piece that advances the cause of an "applied religious philosophy." After viewing the most glorious video presentation, I inscribed what was thought to be a global truth; "We all have rights, equally." I still endorse that message; however, I do not embrace the practices or philosophies of an organization that on occasions is divisive. Sadly, I experience most assemblages are.

I have not come to terms with what seems contradictory. This year, Time Magazine chose you, us, Internet users as the persons of the year. Time editors recognized citizens are creating and documenting the news. We, the people have ample access. Currently, we have freedom of speech; yet, simultaneously, this right is threatened.

Give Thanks for Genocide. Thanksgiving, National Day of Mourning ©

The day is done, bellies are bloated, and now, rather than pretend to give thanks, we can reflect. Might we mourn our motives, the message, and the myths of Thanksgiving Day?

As a child, I felt as my Mom did in her earliest years, "What are we giving thanks for on this holiday, hurting a loving native nation?" In the first grade, she was sent to the principal's office for questioning the "accepted" truth of Thanksgiving. She understood the tales taught to schoolchildren; however, my Mom contrasted these with what she knew of the Indian people. In my youngest years, I could or would not tolerate "Cowboy and Indian" games or the genre in films. I saw the slaughter of a loving people and wondered, as I do now, "Why do we allow this to happen?" Why would we celebrate such carnage?

Photograph By Jim Young I am dumbfounded or at least, wish I were. America has once again proved itself xenophobic! I awoke to the news, “Senate Votes to Set English as National Language.” Apparently, on Thursday, May 18, 2006, the Senate agreed to declare English this nation’s official language. The debate, prior to the formal poll was passionate. The word “racism” was tossed about. Nevertheless, the bigoted belied what they know to be correct and voted overwhelmingly to impose English upon all that enter this land. The final vote was 63 in favor, 34 against.

However, 'moments later,' the voice of reason filled the room, Senate members altered their stance slightly. They again voted, and this time passed a less powerful amendment. English would be titled the “unifying language.” I ask how a divisive dictum can unify rather than divide. Sadly, I am certain I will not receive an answer that I can comprehend. According to Democratic Senator Harry Reid “Although the intent may not be there, I really believe this amendment is racist. I believe it is directed at people who speak Spanish.” Mr. Reid, I trust that is true. America has become focused on Mexican immigrants. This nation wants the “Brown” out!

I have seen the look before, the focused eye, the stare full of hope. Years ago, I thought it was fear and for some it was. However, later many told me it was not for them. Pupils told me where their minds were in those first moments, what they were thinking as I shared my classroom standards with them. Many said they were focused on my face, my words, and me. Some stated that in the very first seconds they were scared; they had never heard a voice so certain and firm while still being so calm and caring. They were in awe.

Shock filled their minds. There was no screaming, yelling, or rage; I was merely resolute. I offered stories to explain my stance. I asked if there are questions. I requested that they participate. I actively wanted to ensure that there was a complete understanding. Students have said they appreciated this opportunity, the exchange. They had heard the “rules” from other instructors; however, mine were different; they provided for choice. For most, my presentation was also unusual. However, more than the vast majority understood my words. I knew this by their behavior.

Today, those gazes caught my attention again. They continue to fill my mind.
