Pt 1 - National Cathedral Message - Story of The Two Wolves

Angert.  BeThink.org It was 11:22 Ante Meridian, on January 21, 2009.  I did as I rarely do.  I stood silently and watched television.  As one who listens to what is aired, and does so from another room, this was an unusual occurrence.  However, the Cherokee wisdom of wolves, an illustration that represents the internal strife within every human being beckoned me.   Then, at the very same hour on the very next day, again I was compelled to do what is odd for me.  I did not say a word as I glared at humanitarian actions took place on the screen.  President Barack Obama proclaimed, by Executive Order, the United States would not torture.  Nor would we, as a nation, detain presumed "combatants" without a just trial.  On each occasion, I was in awe as I gazed upon what I had not imagined would come to pass.  Upon reflection, the two events seem to be related.

The Courts and Congress have come to believe there is reason for fear. Enemies are everywhere. Those who wish to do us harm are in our homes. They talk to us on our telephones. Some sashay in through our computers. "Evil doers" are ubiquitous in the United States. Our open society places the public at risk. We, the people, must defend ourselves. Thus, the Supreme Court and Congress have given the government and us the means. The highest judicial body in the nation has made it possible for the common man to protect himself with a pistol; Legislators provided the President ethereal firearms. Indeed, individuals and the Commander-In-Chief were bequeathed more than either had asked for. In 2008, we have entered the Summer of Separation. In the United States we say, "Farewell to privacy. Hello to arms."

It was a quiet day in America; yet, the feeling of fear was palpable. Oceans away, in Baghdad, the air was filled with the smell of napalm. Frightened, as the young contemplated their future, seventy some courageous and committed students filed into the Morton West High School cafeteria in Berwyn, Illinois. Trepidation for their lives, and the lives of friends, family, and those innocent Iraqi citizens they never met prompted these pupils to take action. The young and eligible enlistees protested the war in Iraq.

The video speaks volumes. The presentation is fun; yet, not funny. Indeed, as you say Mister Bush, this is a serious matter. Today we have a White House that cannot be trusted too keep their word, or in fact, they can be. After an extensive investigation, years of probing, the courts convicted I. [Scooter] Lewis Libby of a crime against the State. It was determined that this Former White House Aide is guilty of one count of obstruction justice, two counts of perjury, and one count of making false statements to Federal investigators. Libby lied to a Grand Jury and to the Federal Bureau of Investigation examiners.

Each day the Bush/Cheney Administration entertains us. They offer new twists and turns in what is seen as a “comedy of errors.” Possibly this latest report is classified as “comedy of the absurd.” This week it was revealed that Vice President Dick Cheney is not part of the Executive Branch. Indeed, he is above the law, at least that is what the Vice President's office claims.

On this day, August 10, 2006, airports and airlines in the United States and United Kingdom, are on “red alert.” This is the highest of all warning levels invoked since terrorism became our truth. Precautionary measures are being enforced with vigilance. All liquids and gels are forbidden on flights. These are thought too volatile. It is known, presumed, or suspected radicals were planning to mix fluids while planes were in the air. These solutions would then be unstable, possibly explosive. “Baby formulas and medicines are the only exceptions, though passengers may be asked to verify that these are not toxic.”

The times they are a changing. I ask you, what are your thoughts on terrorism, here, and abroad?
