An article in the New York Times grabbed my attention instantly.  It appeared in the health section.  The title, One Spoonful at a Time.  This writing was heartfelt. Author, Harriet Brown tells a gripping tale.  It took me to memories of my own struggle with anorexia and bulimia and how these affected my family.  In this exposé, the dilemma of how to treat the condition was thoroughly discussed.  I wish to share my response to this situation and story.  My personal experience of this is vast.  I hope my thoughts, realizations, and rejoinders on this topic will be helpful to those grappling with similar issues.  I trust that the effects of anorexia and bulimia are trials and tribulations for all those afflicted by these.

The subject of weight alone is a sensitive probing.  An individual need not starve, binge, or purge in wrestling with weight.  On the same day another New York Times essay loomed large entitled "Big People on Campus."  This commentary contemplated the plight of being "fat."  I was once that too.  Many may muse in this moment, all anorexics believe they are chubby, and while that may or may not be true, I actually was at times in my life.  My weight rarely was stable; nor was I when reflecting upon it.  However, my weight was never the issue; it was a distraction, a symptom of what was within.

Public opinion polls are again called into question. President Bush boasts he does not pay attention to these studies. In 1999, candidate Bush criticized Former President Clinton and presidential aspirant Albert Gore for exalting such silly surveys. As his numbers slip daily, Bush 43 reminds us, he has no time for following such tomfoolery. George W. Bush is a man that thinks for him self. Our resolute ruler trusts; he knows what is best for the country and for the world.

Mr. Bush is not an anomaly. According to a July 21, 2006, Harris Poll® most Americans prefer their personal perceptions to facts. They are not necessarily convinced by news reports, if the perspective differs from their own. Humphrey Taylor, Chairman of the Harris Poll, spoke of this in a recent interview with Journalist Bob Garfield of “On the Media” fame. In this dialogue Mr. Taylor proclaimed, currently fifty percent of Americans are convinced; Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. They believe this despite all evidence to the contrary.

Days ago, I published a piece that I knew was controversial. I posted it here at Be-Think and at Village Blue. In my original writing, I examined the vocal discussion surrounding a child’s molestation. A group of twelve boys, all between the ages of eight and six were responsible for this attack, though many said negligent teachers were. Few if any spoke of the boys’ parents or more importantly, in my mind, what we, as a society teach. I did.

I suspected my stance might not be considered correct by some, even though my intent was to teach peace. The incident raised the “hackles” of one reader; s/he did think the teachers needed to be more vigilant. Possibly, that may be true. However, for me, this all too frequently stated focus was distracting.

I felt and feel there was so much more to discuss. That brings me to this writing. I want to expand my sharing. I think it may be helpful if I offer examples that are more practical. I would like to present ones that most anyone can relate to. I have decided to make public my reply to the person that thought my stance unsettling. I invite you, dear reader to discuss, to offer opinions, and to help me reflect.

I have seen the look before, the focused eye, the stare full of hope. Years ago, I thought it was fear and for some it was. However, later many told me it was not for them. Pupils told me where their minds were in those first moments, what they were thinking as I shared my classroom standards with them. Many said they were focused on my face, my words, and me. Some stated that in the very first seconds they were scared; they had never heard a voice so certain and firm while still being so calm and caring. They were in awe.

Shock filled their minds. There was no screaming, yelling, or rage; I was merely resolute. I offered stories to explain my stance. I asked if there are questions. I requested that they participate. I actively wanted to ensure that there was a complete understanding. Students have said they appreciated this opportunity, the exchange. They had heard the “rules” from other instructors; however, mine were different; they provided for choice. For most, my presentation was also unusual. However, more than the vast majority understood my words. I knew this by their behavior.

Today, those gazes caught my attention again. They continue to fill my mind.
