Universal Pain; Effect of Economic and Emotional Depression

Teresa Madison forlorn and torn by life's dilemmas contemplates a reality she never considered before. Death by one's own hand may be the latest and greatest in preventative medicine. Suicide can be a cure for what ails a person, or at least many have come to believe this is so. In her age group, more people deliberately take their lives. Only months ago, Ms Madison perused an article that appeared in The New York Times; Midlife Suicide Rises, Puzzling Researchers. Teresa was not perplexed. Ms Madison knows to her core society is consumed with ills. Physical, mental, emotional, financial woes, and a sense of finality overwhelm individuals in the United States. Teresa feels heaviness in her heart when she opens her mailbox and sees the bills. Her empty pocketbook cannot ease her pain. Nor does it alleviate the aches her family feels.

Senators Clinton and Obama, bicker as you might, neither of you have proposed Universal Health Care plans. Those who support you [plural] state a semantic argument attests to your authenticity. Many espouse "universal" means "to affect, relate to, or include the whole." Granted, all Americans will be changed by your plans. However, not everyone will be insured if either proposal is implemented.

Health care is in the news again. This week, Senator, and Presidential hopeful, Hillary Clinton proposed the latest cure for what ails this country. Clinton declared medical insurance must be mandatory. Under her plan, all Americans will be covered. Days later, President George W. Bush spoke of how he believes we can best heal the ills of impoverished children in this country. Mister Bush proclaimed parents must pay for the care of their progeny. The medical system must remain in the hands of private industry. There are no handouts here. If Moms and Dads have income, they must provide for their children. While the plans may seem drastically different, they are very similar.

Health, A Right or a Privilege For The Few ©

On September 14, 2006, the Commonwealth Fund revealed the results of a recent study on Health Insurance. The news was disheartening though not surprising to me. Nearly nine out of ten workers seeking Individual Health Care coverage do not find a plan that they can afford. Ultimately, these persons decide to forfeit medical protection. They hope and pray that they will stay healthy. Such is the state of the union in the United States of America; it has been my state of affairs more often than not.

Currently, in 2006, sixty-one [61] percent of American firms offer health care benefits. Only a year ago sixty-nine [69] percent offered such prized perks. However, as health care costs increase employers forego providing this “luxury.” Since 2000, premiums have increased eighty-seven percent; wages twenty percent. Employers are only willing or able to extend themselves so far. Corporate executives say something has to give; they have concluded it can no longer be them. Thus, more and more individual citizens are seeking health care coverage and finding they cannot afford it.
